Geospatial Technologies, Infrastructure Maintenance and the Resilience of our Cities

Making a city resilient in the face of natural disasters is a decades work. Geospatial Intelligence is here to help.IntroductionFor a little while, urban resilience has been an important yet complex topic.

Geospatial Technologies, Infrastructure Maintenance and the Resilience of our Cities 1

Resilience involves not only prepping cities to better respond to natural disasters but also taking steps to prevent them. Some catastrophes caused by seemingly natural disasters are only partially the result of natural causes; they are also the result of failed urban planning and lack of maintenance. This situation places the responsibility of minimising the risk of natural catastrophes in the hands of city planners, lawmakers and the local population.

Acknowledging the ageing infrastructure and repurposing it to face the challenges of creating cities that are smart, sustainable and future-proofed is a primary challenge of resilience. This concern has become an even more pressing issue in the era of climate change, when much of that infrastructure is endangered by extreme weather conditions or the need to become fit for a sustainable low carbon future.Making a city resilient is a decades work.

While cities do not have the luxury of fixing major urban challenges in a short span of time, there is certainly a need for increased investment in single infrastructure initiatives that address multiple challenges in one go. Whether we pursue physical resilience in the face of natural hazards or economic resilience in the face of uncertain times, urban resilience requires an unprecedented level of coordination and collaboration between different levels of government, industries and humanitarian organisations.Ushering in Geospatial TechnologiesIn the digital era, geospatial technologies are revolutionising the economy.

From navigating public transport to monitoring supply chains and designing efficient distribution paths, location-based digital services, Earth Observation data and the insights that can be derived from the where dimension in a digital space has seen exponential growth in the volume of spatial information. From smartphones to satellite sensors, from ground-penetrating radars to immersive and 3D technologies, from LiDAR to Building Information Modelling (BIM) and machine learning, the level of ubiquity at which geospatial data is being incorporated into building & maintaining infrastructure practices is growing rapidly.Geospatial data working in synergy with machine learning and other emerging technologies is becoming the enabling factor that helps to build better, smarter, more sustainable and efficient cities.

Lets have a look at some of these technologies and their impact on society. Drones for InfrastructureOperating at height is not the only threat for officials. They can also come into contact with toxic substances and pollutants, running vehicles, or traffic speeding and high-voltage machinery.

When an asset is in poor condition these risks intensify. High-resolution images, thermal imaging, landscape maps, 3D models, LiDAR cloud points, volumetrics unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can collect this broad range of data, often in (almost) real-time and make it available for analysis. In the US, drones are now used for bridge, pavement, and light-pole inspections, as well as for gathering aerial views of highway constructions in progress.

Drones deliver much better data about whats going on, without requiring inspectors to climb to heights, go up in a bucket truck or be in close proximity to speeding traffic. One study found drones could detect cracks in concrete bridges as low as 0.02 inches, even in low-light conditions.

AI-powered UAV mapping provides devices with revolutionary ways of observing and understanding the world. Efficient capabilities for geographic and location-based data collection, evaluation and estimation result in great benefits for the infrastructure sector. Furthermore, Geospatial AI (GeoAI) has the potential to:increase the efficiency of the supply chainsimprove land survey and infrastructure evaluation strategiesmake a significant contribution to disaster aid and mitigation.

All of this contributes to cost reduction, productivity increases, and the achievement of targets related to decarbonising the construction and infrastructure industry, making it more sustainable.Building Information Modelling (BIM) for the WinThrough improved mapping tools and photos of Earth, the plethora of information that is easily accessible for the maintenance of infrastructure has increased tremendously. Today, when a new project is launched it often involves acquiring geospatial data -from point clouds to digital elevation effectively documenting reality while simplifying procedures.

BIM can help with building complete 3D representations of real infrastructures, which in turn can help capture vital information about subsidence and risk of damage; this may be, for example, the cause of work stoppages. Monitoring infrastructure through the use of BIM can ensure that work doesnt stop unnecessarily. Digital Twins, the New BuzzwordA digital twin is a digital representation of a physical asset, process or system that enables users to visualise it, check its status, perform analysis and generate insights in order to predict and optimize asset performance.

Digital twins are continuously updated with data from multiple sources which is what makes them different from static, 3D models making it the next major thing in the infrastructure industries.Bentley Systems, for example, has helped the city of Lisbon shift from a reactive to a proactive mindset, by implementing a digital twin framework to monitor and mitigate the flood risks expected due to climate change. The rising ocean and repeated heavy rain have elevated the risk of flooding; due to the heavily built urban environment, flood occurrences have increased and became more damaging.

As the current city infrastructure does not allow the monitoring of optimal drainage systems, the city of Lisbon generated a virtual twin that helps them simulate alternative scenarios extensively, drawing up plans to mitigate the risks associated with flooding. This virtual twin enables Lisbon to build infrastructure resilience within the city mesh, saving millions on potential damage costs and possibly lives. An Eye in the SkyIn the aftermath of the Morandi Bridge collapse in Genova in August 2018, which killed 43 people and left 600 homeless, a consortia of scientists in the USA, Italy and the UK (Milillo et al.

2019) has shown that it is possible to assess potential pre-failure clues of critical infrastructures based on Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations.Asset managers require liable and long-term monitoring of the performance and condition of their assets, in order to maximize their operation and utilisation, while preventing potential catastrophic collapses. InSAR can measure deformation in near real-time, which can help engineers to spot structural issues and prevent failures before it is too late.

As pointed in this post by Thomas Beaton, Senior Earth Observation Engineer at Telespazio Vega UK, by combining 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) with satellite-derived Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) survey measurements, it is possible to visualise structural movement dynamics for preventative maintenance purposes.ConclusionAccurate geospatial information is helping immensely and will continue to help policymakers, international agencies and civil society have greater insight into the allocation of needs and ways of optimising construction planning, maintenance, expenditure and the development of better initiatives. A deeper understanding and management of location-based data and facilities integrated with infrastructure planning and other sources of information such as population data, smartphone data, surveys, and organizational data can enable more optimal distribution of resources for smarter service delivery, and also make the infrastructure we already have more resilient for the future RELATED QUESTION In the film 'Barry Lyndon', Barry's brother admits tricking him and says, "We loaded your gun with tow.

Digital assets: they grow up so fast
Digital assets: they grow up so fast
The news that JPMorgan is now banking Gemini and Coinbase and processing their users USD deposits and withdrawals is a game-changer and provides a roadmap for the further integration of digital assets into mainstream modern finance. Why did JPMorgan do it? Tactically, processing transactions for 30 million users with minimal risk, due to the exchanges compliance standards, makes commercial sense and result in new retail customers. However, this decision is bound to be more strategic. The meaning of money is changing with the last financial crisis, the introduction of digital assets and mobile payment technologies, and now covid-19. The USD (and a handful of other currencies) remains a useful unit of account but is coming under attack from different sides as a means of exchange and store of value. While the store of value quality of the USD is being undermined by zero and negative interest rates and new record printing $3 trillion in the last quarter the Chinese are introducing a digital yuan, tech companies are devising new alternatives (e. g. Libra) and billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones is talking about the birthing of a store of value through bitcoin. We believe that many more banks will follow JPMorgans example and get involved with the regulated digital asset space. The programmability of digital assets on blockchain rails allows for better security, smarter compliance and faster distribution to those in society in need of funds. While borrowing the unit of account convenience from the USD, a digital asset can be a more efficient medium of exchange which can instantly move between your phone and existing payment infrastructure. It can also be programmed such that it generates interest or dividends from an automated pool of assets such as bitcoin or gold or fixed income ETFs, thereby serving as a much safer short- medium- and long-term store of value. Dividend bearing assets, usable as money all over the world, on your mobile phone. JPMorgans latest step is an important development, but the future is already here RELATED QUESTION Where can I purchase sugar rush kids clothing in wholesale? As if there wasnt enough news coming out of 10 Downing Street, it was a shock to hear Larry the resident cat making the headlines too.Larry, Number 10s official chief mouser was spotted limping back home in the morning of last Wednesday 20th July. There is some speculation that Larry clashed with Westminster mouser, Palmerston who resides at the Foreign Office. An alternative theory is that he came off worse after taking on a fox. The investigation continues. With Larry being ordered to stay in bed for the next seven days by his vet, Palmerston may take the chance to vie for top job in yet another Downing Street coup. With tensions running high, it looks like the chief mouser could do with the help of Feliway Classic to help calm him down and feel safe and secure in his home. Ask Curology: is my acne face wash making me break out?
Medically reviewed by: Nancy Satur, MDWritten by: Curology Editorial TeamWelcome to Ask Curology, a series on the Curology blog where one of our in-house licensed dermatology providers answers your questions about all things skincare. Today were talking about face wash for acne and ingredients to avoid in skincare. Why do some face washes supposedly meant to help with acne seem to make matters worse? Turns out its all about the fine print: the ingredients list. There are many different acne causes, but below, our derm providers narrow it down if you think your acne face wash might be behind your worsening breakouts.Got a burning skincare question of your own? Come hang out with us on Instagram and keep your eyes peeled for our provider takeover series on our stories. We answer your questions in real time!Dear Curology Derm,Ive been using this acne-fighting face wash to help clear up acne breakouts and get my oily skin under control, but I dont think its working. Actually, Ive been breaking out more ever since I started using it! The label says its supposed to clear acne and control oil, so what gives?Sincerely,Dismayed and ConfusedDear Dismayed,Not to defend your potentially pore-clogging cleanser, but its possible your skin might be going through a normal and pretty common process called purging. Some people experience acne purging in the first few weeks to months of treating acne with active ingredients, including common over-the-counter anti-acne ingredients like salicylic acid. Awful as it is to go through this, it actually means your acne treatment is working! Basically, the underlying acne in your skin is working its way out as your skin adjusts to the new situation. Learn more about acne purging here. We know it isnt easy to endure, to say the least. But if youre patient, treat your skin gently, and keep up with your treatment, these breakouts should clear up soon! If they still dont clear up after a couple months, thats a good time to try a different approach like signing up for Curology, where youll get a customized acne-fighting cream and a one-on-one treatment plan from one of us dermatology providers.Your skin might not be purging itself of acne, though depending on the ingredients in your face wash, it could be breaking out in reaction to the product itself! Here are a few other explanations for why a face wash designated for acne-prone and/or oily skin could potentially make acne worse:1. It has pore-clogging ingredients. Unfortunately, theres no FDA regulation of terms like non-comedogenic on skincare or cosmetic products, so some products marketed toward those susceptible to acne sneak pore-clogging ingredients into the mix. In our research, weve found ingredients including laureth-4, isopropyl myristate, sodium laureth sulfate, and carrageenan in several so-called anti-acne and oil-control cleansers.2. It contains alcohol. Alcohol can dry out the skin and strip it of its natural protective barrier. Irritation and inflammation of the skin can make it vulnerable to acne breakouts.3. It has an active ingredient that is too strong for your skin (or you might be using it too frequently). Many acne face washes you can buy at the drugstore contain salicylic acid, a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) that can help unclog pores, or benzoyl peroxide, an antiseptic. Some people experience dryness or irritation from using these, and irritated skin can be more prone to acne breakouts. If your skin is on the sensitive side, you may want to look for a lower strength or switch to a gentle cleanser like the cleanser by Curology, which comes with the full set when you subscribe! and use a topical cream or other acne treatment recommended by your dermatology provider. When in doubt, custom skincare is what its aboutIf youre struggling with acne and your so-called acne-fighting face wash just doesnt cut the mustard, its time to try something different: a customized treatment for your unique skin. Sign up for a free trial of Curology to get your very own custom acne-fighting cream, plus our must-have moisturizer and gentle cleanser when you sign up for the full set. When the Weight of the World Gets Too Heavy
When the Weight of the World Gets Too Heavy
The emotion know as anxiety.Im getting fully engrossed in this new lifestyle of working for myself. There are lots of perks so far, but there are also some real negative aspects. I have faced many emotions during this time and a new type is anxiety. I can honestly say I have never been an anxious person. The major changes occurring on this enduring adventure have brought these emotions into perspective for me. The oxford dictionary describes Anxiety as:A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. If I had to describe my new anxiety it would be in the following way:A feeling of overwhelming despair that I will never overcome all of the negative things in my lifeWhen these feelings and emotions come on they usually come on in a big way. Its so easy to let all the unknown negatives in my life weigh on my shoulders. Before you know it, you cant even think straight. This causes the anxiety to feed on itself and soon, all I can do is just sit down and cry.I faced these situations early on my journey and recognized right away I needed to find a way to manage. Over the past few months Ive found four very effective methods for facing these times of despair and I feel they can work for you too. Distinguish your perspective. The first difference I made in managing my anxiety was recognizing and acknowledging this new emotion. It may seem obvious, but without doing this you allow the opportunity for your anxiety to take control. Looking back, I realized losing control over my emotions was a big problem. If you dont encourage awareness to come when the feelings of dread and despair do, then you have no power to choose what to do with them. If your emotions run wild with you, youll end up in a spiral of compounding feelings. When this happens you lose total perspective on what the true nature of your situation is. When you feel negative thoughts building in your mind, let that be a trigger to pay attention. The act of awareness of your emotions is the most powerful first step to remaining in control. When you are aware of feeling anxious you can let your feelings come to you while maintaining an objective point of view. This kind of perspective allows you to feel, as well as recognize, what is causing the feelings. If you stop and say to yourself,I am feeling anxious about making enough money to support myselfThen you give your anxiety a focal point. From this focal point you can separate the emotional from the rational parts of your reality. You can gain awareness that money is something youre uncertain about, or dont feel confident in. It gives you room to breathe and begin the conversation with yourself about the issue. I use this technique all the time to help me manage the tough emotions that come my way. Do a reality check. Once you gain perspective on the thing that is causing your anxiety, you can take some time to really look it over. Oftentimes our anxieties can seem so overwhelming because they all come at once and we feel powerless to confront them. I have found almost all the time there is no immediate threat from our anxieties. When our imagination runs wild in creative ways we are happy with the interesting results that come to mind. When our imagination does the same in negative ways, like with our anxieties, it can deeply affect us and make a seemingly manageable situation into a catastrophe.Again the example of not having enough money is a classic for so many people. We all feel this ever-present specter of money and expenses looming over us. If we let our minds wander into the unknown about our financial situation, it can build into a disastrous anxiety attack almost out of nowhere. But what happens when we stop and actually take a look at our financial situation. I have found so often that my fears about money are not even relevant, mainly because expenses usually do not come all at once. Now thats not to say that expenses can come on rapidly, but even if they do we have time to pay things off if we strategize and discipline yourself. I dont want to insinuate that being financially irresponsible is ok, because to make it as an entrepreneur, financial intelligence and thriftiness are a must. In any case though, if we take a step back from our anxiety and give them a good reality check we often see that they dont have much reality to stand on.We are all doing our best to be successful and provide for ourselves, and I bet most of us have our shit together more than we think. When we take an honest look at our situation in the face of feeling anxious, were not in such dire straits as we may feel. Doing this reality check is a good way to accurately and objectively find areas we are struggling in.If we can use our anxiety to check in on our situation, we may identify aspects of our lives requiring more attention. It gives us another focal point to put our energy toward. Often having a clear goal in mind is required to motivate us to take action.Make a new choice. The next bit of advice is a tough one because it can get convoluted with some popular motivational ideals. I have heard so often from motivational gurus saying,Your happiness comes from within you, so choose to be happyTo this I have to say, no thanks. I fully embrace that we must allow negative emotions into our lives when we feel them. This is necessary to ensure we pay attention to our needs as individuals. It helps us keep in touch with what is truly important. Negative emotions can sometimes be powerful indicators that we have an imbalance in our lives. They may tell us something we cant consciously see or understand. I say telling people to choose to be happy is about as effective as telling someone who is hungry to chose to be full. Some things cannot be easily overcome with mind power. On the other hand, I think we are fully capable of making a choice when it comes to how we react to our emotions. By having awareness and perspective on our anxiety we can ask ourselves this more relevant question. Is allowing these negative anxious feeling to stay with me going to help me in the long runThis question invites you to consider your options on how to handle the anxious emotions. Say for instance, youre feeling anxious about not having enough time for work. If you gain focus enough to ask yourself,Is descending into an anxious spiral going to be an effective use of my time? These types of questions can break a cycle that could easily overwhelm you. I often use this method for bringing an episode of anxious thoughts to a close. It puts a real clear presence of mind on your anxiety and shows you that losing control of your emotions is not going to help. You need to give yourself space to feel your emotions, and setting aside dedicated time to be with them is important. This is a much healthier alternative than an uncontained emotional spiral. This time can often lead to meditations on what is bothering you in the first place. Making a conscious choice about how you handle your anxiety is not easy by any means, but when you practice taking control you strengthen your ability to be in control. Find things to be grateful for. The last piece of advice I have is more of a preventative measure that I have used to great effect. While it may seem cheesy, creating a list of gratitudes is a powerful tool to keep your mind and thoughts in a positive space. When you take the time to honestly ask yourself what great things you have in your life you gain a vast amount of insight. You create a living document that shows what positive aspects you embody during difficult times. This list can always be expanding too as new things and people come into your life. Youll be surprised what you really appreciate and hold gratitude for. Realizing these things and the emotions they bring can be a powerful exercise.Your gratitude list can also be a steadfast tool to ground yourself when you feel anxieties building. When you have that deep sinking feeling in your stomach about whatever your mind is focussing on, you can break that thought process by reading your gratitudes list. Ive done this many times over the last few months and it always proved effective in guiding me back to my positivity. I eventually made this a sort of mantra and routine for me as I would go to bed.I created a short ceremony where I put my mind into a calm space and then recite my gratitude out loud. Doing this fills me with a sense of happiness and fulfillment with the many things I have in my life. It really does keep your mind in a positive space, and make you more aware and familiar with the good things in life. I highly suggest you try it and see if you dont get a happy boost when your list is complete. Our emotions are a part of us. Anxiety is something that we must embrace from time to time and I think when we manage it well, it is a healthy part of our emotional horizon. I have come to realize the importance of embracing negative emotions as they help to bring balance, focus, and perspective to our lives in general. Breaking into entrepreneurship makes you face some real and very harsh anxieties. I have developed these methods to ensure it wont keep me from reaching my dreams.I know these can work for you as well and even trying them is a positive action you should be really proud of. Our emotions are our own and I know we must face them as individuals on this journey we call life. I hope this advice has given you a few more ways to meet these challenges. You grow stronger every time you show up for yourself and give your emotion the consideration they deserve RELATED QUESTION In the film 'Barry Lyndon', Barry's brother admits tricking him and says, "We loaded your gun with tow." How to Win Every Argument
How to Win Every Argument
When you debate your friends, do you sometimes feel like the kid who gets sand kicked in his face by the overly-muscled bruiser on the beach? Well, no more my friends. Im gonna show you how to win every argument. You see, Ive been engaging in the dangerous activity lately of discussing politics on Facebook. If youve tried something similar in this or previous elections, you know what a minefield it can be. Through it all, Ive become convinced that people dont know how to persuade each other anymore. They simply talk at each other. So here are a few notes to helpMemes Are EvilWell, some memes are hilarious and cute. When it comes to political memes, however, they tend to evoke the opposite reaction of what you intend. If youre a die-hard Trump supporter, chances are you at least got a chuckle from the Hillary meme maybe even nodded your head once or twice. Did you chuckle and do the same for the Trump meme? Likewise for Hillary supporters. Did you like being called an idiot? Probably not, just as the Trump supporter didnt like being called stupid. If you didnt chuckle at either meme, then congratulations, you might actually have a sense of humor.Who Are You Convincing?Political memes tend to be shared with people who already agree with them. At the same time, they ostracize those who dont agree. Sharing these memes just strokes your own ego instead of doing what real Americans do: engage in thoughtful discussions about how to move our country forward. Did I just ostracize you? Apparently, Im so good I can do it without a meme. Memes Are Not ArgumentsAnother problem with political memes: they are not arguments. At best, theyre lines from really bad stand-up comedy routines. Dont kid yourself into thinking youre persuading anyone. More likely than not, youre just cementing the other persons beliefs that youre an idiot and shouldnt breed.Name-calling isnt going to work any better than it did in the school yard.Belief Is Not EvidenceBefore you brand me as an anti-christian warrior Im not talking about religious faith here. Religious belief can and should inform the public policy decisions you make, but be consistent and dont cherry pick. Its hypocritical to claim on one hand that gay marriage will destroy the sanctity of marriage while also denigrating Hillary Clinton who has personally fought to avoid divorce and maintain her own marriage. I could go on about forgiveness tooSo back to belief and evidence Just because you believe something, doesnt make it so. Evidence and facts are critical to making decisions. You use them in your every day life to survive. The pan is hot enough to fry bacon so it will probably fry your hand. Why not do the same in political discussions? Say it with me facts are good. Thats not to say that facts cannot be interpreted differently (and thats where logic comes in), but the facts still exist.Simply believing something to be true is a way to hide that you dont have evidence or logic to support your position. Everyone fancies themselves independent thinkers. In reality, though, most people who pound their chest and declare their independence are nothing more than sheep. Liberals and conservatives can be guilty of this so no finger pointing. Just remember, when you spout lines someone else gave you and cant back it up with evidence and logic, you proclaim to the world that theres no independent thought going on in that noggin. The Conspiracy To Make You Believe In ConspiraciesTheres a darker side to relying on belief instead of evidence. It makes you vulnerable to conspiracy theories. After all, if what you believe is true but you cant find evidence to support it, there must be some other reason, right? It cant possibly be that youre wrong. Someone must be hiding that evidence. Time to pull out the Reynolds Wrap because weve got some hats to make.To believe a conspiracy theory is akin to being a member of a cult just without all the religious overtones. It makes you easily exploitable. When you are no longer tethered to facts and reality, its a simple matter to tell you whatever fiction furthers the exploiters interests. In case you misunderstand me, I am saying that believing conspiracy theories puts you in company with the Moonies and members of Heavens Gate. The takeaway? Dont follow this guyVideo of Marshall Herff Applewhite [Getty Images]Brooks Kraft / Sygmaembed. gettyimages. comUnfortunately, weve let this type of argument go un-checked for too long. It was kind of fun to think about aliens at Area 51 and laugh at the people who thought the moon landing was a hoax. The sad fact is that millions of dollars are made from book sales and websites created by people who know that once youre untethered from reality they can sell you any crazy idea the crazier the better. The result is weve reached a point where the current Republican presidential candidate made his political name by peddling one such conspiracy theory.Respond To The ArgumentIn my discussions, I find its very difficult to get the other person to actually respond to my argument. They will either disappear and not respond or make some point that bears no relation to my argument. The ivory-tower elite have a fancy word for this: non sequitur. Its Latin for it does not follow. There is no logical connection between point A and point B. Put another way our points are like two ships passing in the night and yours suddenly takes flight and crashes into the moon. I have had conversations where Im talking about the foreign business interests of Trumps corporation and how it might impact his governance as president and the response I get is: yeah, but what about Hillarys emails. If you let them continue talking, theyll list all sorts of other reasons why Hillary is an evil person as if that is somehow a response to Trumps possible foreign conflicts of interest. Its enough to give you whiplash. The prevalence of this type of pattern leads me to think that many of my conservative friends all read a book titled something like How to Win Any Argument Against a Liberal and this was chapter one. I have yet to find the book, but the approach appears to be that when confronted with an argument you cant answer, start listing as many arguments as possible. Ideally, they shouldnt have any relationship to the original argument. In debate we used to call this spewing. Because collegiate debates have time limits, throwing out a lot of arguments regardless of their validity, can overwhelm your opponent. They simply dont have enough time to respond. It doesnt matter if 80% of your points are invalid. This is a technique used when playing the game of college debate. It is not something to use if you want to come to consensus or actually persuade someone. Our public policy is not a game. It affects real people daily and should be treated with the same kind of gravity. To summarize, respond to the argument using facts and reasoning. Its not hard but it does mean you have to think for yourself and maybe do a little research.Admit You May Be WrongIf you read my first post, youll remember this as Rule #2. No one owns the truth. If you refuse to entertain the possibility that you may be wrong, youll never learn something new. As with facts, if you are wrong, you are wrong, regardless of what you believe. No one wants to admit theyre wrong these days. I understand. Its a hard thing to do. It takes courage to do so. All of us are human. We are not immune to mistakes or misunderstandings. Yet we feel that by admitting we were wrong, were somehow weakened. In reality, the opposite is true. Its kind of funny. We demand that Hillary Clinton apologize (which she did do) for saying half of Trump supporters are deplorable and that Trump apologize (which he did not do) for trying to delegitimize our first African-American president by questioning his country of birth. All the while we refuse to admit our own mistakes and shortcomings. Be Curious. Take Time To Read An Opposing OpinionOf course, even if you admit you may be wrong, youll never know it unless you engage with those who dont agree with you. Its easier than ever these days to consume only the news and opinions that agree with your world view. Change it up and seek out some well-researched and reasoned articles on the other side of the political spectrum. Try to read with an open mind and remember that they are human beings with the same basic needs and desires as you. They may have a different perspective. How about taking some time to find out why? Here are a few sources to get you started news, liberal, and conservative. Of course, when you read their opinion pieces, dont take what they say as gospel. As Reagan said, Trust but verify. Wall Street Journal wsj. com/)New York Times nytimes. com/)Washington Post washingtonpost. com/)The Economist economist. com/)The Weekly Standard weeklystandard. com/)The National Review nationalreview. com/)The Nation thenation. com/)The Atlantic theatlantic. com/)The New Yorker newyorker. com/)Ultimately, Were Not All That DifferentAmericans love competition, but we sometimes forget we play for the same team. Prompted by a conservative friend, I read an article in which a number of Trump supporters were interviewed about why they were voting for him.Rather than read it with a combative mind, I reminded myself that these individuals were American. I may not agree with them, but I wanted to hear, in their own words, why they were voting for Trump. You know what I discovered after finishing that article? I still didnt agree with them. But, I didnt hate them either. I could better understand how they looked at the election and the issues. Listening is so important now more than ever. Whether you come from the Right or the Left, if you really want to persuade someone, you must first understand them. Incidentally, I dont think my conservative friend did me the same courtesy by reading my post in response. We Are Not EnemiesI am taking the time to listen and respond to my conservative friends, but I expect them to do the same. If they dont give you the same courtesy and respect you gave them, call them out on it. We have to listen to one another if were ever going to right this ship. So How Do You Win Every Argument?Stop sharing stupid political memes. Cute animal memes are still acceptable, though we can only take so much.Use facts and logic, not conspiracy theoriesRespond to the argument with a cogent relevant response. Understand the other person. Try to understand why they hold their positions. If you fail to do this, you will never convince them.If the other person is right, admit it. Thank them for helping you learn something new. Not only will you shock the heck out of them, but their opinion of you will grow immeasurably. Theyll also be more willing to give your thoughts a fair hearing in the future. Its really easy to win every argument by following these five steps. The thing is, even if you lose, you still win. If both sides really want to find an answer, then both sides win, regardless of who loses the argument RELATED QUESTION Where can I purchase sugar rush kids clothing in wholesale? Podcast: Who gets to vote?
Podcast: Who gets to vote?
In a democracy, youd think its everyone. But the history of the U.S. shows something different. Communities of color continue to face barriers to the ballot and a 2013 Supreme Court decision has only made it worse. This is playing out now in states like Georgia and Kansas. So how can policy choices actually encourage voter access? Turns out, there are plenty of ways. From automatic voter registration to same-day voting, the laboratories of democracy are experimenting with and implementing solutions. And international democracies like Australia and Germany use different tactics to get majorities of people to the polls. As a masters student at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, I reported and helped produce this piece. Interviewees include former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm; Kristen Clarke, president & executive director of the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law; and Nikki Fisher, executive director of the Oregon Voter Information Project RELATED QUESTION In the film 'Barry Lyndon', Barry's brother admits tricking him and says, "We loaded your gun with tow." Pretty in Burlap How perfection gets in the way of shipping code
Pretty in Burlap How perfection gets in the way of shipping code
The biggest risk associated with shipping a new feature is that users dont want to use it. But what if the reason they dont want to use a feature is something small, like the way form fields focus, or the way a certain section animates, or a lack of tooltips, or the colour of certain buttons? What if the reason they dont want to use it is that it isnt easy to use? This is a story about the dangers of prioritizing ease of use, how Bench ran into them face-first, and the tools we used to help us overcome them.Trying to build it rightPicture this: Youve decided on a new feature. Its big, with lots of new UI, API endpoints, and operational impact. You need to make sure the rollout goes smoothly, because if users dont have a good first impression theyll probably never look at the feature again. That would be bad, because the executives are counting on this feature to increase engagement and reduce churn. Ideally you want to build it pretty quickly, because a bump in the numbers this coming quarter will be great for next quarters fund-raising.Still with me? Welcome to Bench Engineering just over a month ago. We were working on a feature called Transaction Tagging (the ability to tag transactions based on Line of Business, Location, and Client), and we really wanted it to go well. We wanted it to go so well that we were behind on our milestones, and our commitment to a Beta release at the end of the quarter was looking less and less realistic. This was pretty frustrating because overall we were doing a lot of things right. The Product team had done great research and prep work, so the problem we were trying to solve was well-defined. The Design team had built a clickable prototype that we gave to real clients to validate interest in the feature. Our team was working through tickets and actually deploying code to production several times per week behind a feature flag.So why hadnt we gotten the feature in front of our clients?Paralysis by good intentionsAt Bench, we take pride in making bookkeeping easy. Transaction Tagging is different from most of Benchs technology in that it is the first feature weve built that allows our clients to do data entry. Frankly, this made us nervous. We were worried that if clients didnt think this feature was easy to use it could have a negative effect on their perception of Benchs ability to make their lives easier.Easy to use is one of those statements that eats deadlines for breakfast. When it starts getting thrown around, the definition of done for a feature changes from are they able to do it to are they able to do it easily. When this happens, we start to see the goalposts moved backwards with every ticket, because anything animations, keyboard shortcuts, error handlers, autofocus, text wrapping, hover states, components designed for future complexity, etc. can be justified for ease of use.The worst part about optimizing for ease of use is that it doesnt matter if a user can use a feature easily if they dont want to use it in the first place. The longer we spend optimizing for ease of use, the longer it takes us to learn if this is a feature our users actually want.We needed to break this pattern. We needed to mitigate the perceived risk associated with releasing a less-than-perfect feature. Fortunately for us, Beta isnt the first letter in the Greek alphabet. Alpha AKA BurlapWe decided to think about the Beta release as a product of the future, and instead rebrand the first release as Alpha. We found 5 users who had been asking for the Transaction Tagging functionality and invited them into our Alpha release. We looked at the backlog of tickets and started talking about them in terms of Alpha and Beta. To strengthen the paradigm, we started describing this first release as a burlap sack: you can wear it as a shirt, but itll look dumb and probably be a bit itchy. In meetings we would cue up Let it Go from Frozen and play it whenever anyone was worrying too much about the details. The change was dramatic. Armed with permission to ship an imperfect feature, we started to rip through tickets. Alpha forced us to prioritize the most essential elements of the feature, which narrowed the scope of our focus, and resulted in less context switching during code review and when picking up new tickets. Our velocity during the following sprint was roughly double what it had been over the previous 3 sprints. We ended up releasing the Alpha within 2 weeks of starting to call it Alpha. Its important to note that (despite our Burlap battlecry) we shipped very few bugs. Alpha doesnt mean low quality, it means less complexity.Back to AgileAn interesting side effect of the Alpha/Beta prioritization process was that the remaining Beta tickets were almost all design tweaks and small UX changes. Alpha had pretty much covered all of the tickets that made the feature usable, if not bulletproof. We then had the option to look at each of the remaining tickets in isolation and determine whether they were important enough to block our Beta release to 600 clients. We were back to iterating instead of building a larger and larger release candidate. This was better for two reasons. First, the QA burden is significantly less for small changes than it is for a large release. Second, we were now able to get real feedback from our users.Im happy to say that Transaction Tagging is now released to a Beta group of over 600 clients, and our Sales team have started selling it to new users. How well use this in the futureNow that weve successfully used the Alpha/Beta pattern on one large feature, well test and refine the pattern on our remaining features this quarter. A rough definition of the framework:Alpha: The simplest possible version of a feature. Prioritize can they do it over can they do it easily. The goal is to learn whether they want the feature at all. Keep in mind that your Alpha users will likely be early adopters with a vested interest in the success of the feature; take their feedback with a grain of salt.Beta: Take the time to clean up obvious UX and design deficiencies. Use metrics associated with Alpha to prioritize any remaining ideas for the feature. Implement the ability to monitor the way the feature is being used.General Availability: Once youve learned enough from your Beta users, implement the changes you feel are essential and go live. Now its time to iterate.
